Father’s Day Special: Fathers Who Are Sailors

Father's Day

Father’s Day

As the world celebrates yet another Father’s Day, a time when the kids thank their fathers for being there for them at every point of life, we decided to speak on the behalf of every father who is a sailor and who might be sailing on this very day away from his kid.

Being a father is not easy, it is one hell of a responsibility. What’s harder than that? Being a sailor and a father. Yes, it is one of the toughest combinations I will say.

Why?

Let’s take a look at few points to understand the life of a Father as a Sailor..!!

  1. Many sailors are sailing when there wife is expecting to deliver a baby soon. Just imagine how tough it is to be away from your beloved wife during the time when she needs you the most.
  2. The planning to sign off just in time to make it to that special day to hold his baby in his hands for the very first time doesn’t always go right, there are some unforeseen circumstances which might not allow a timely sign off. All a sailor can think of at such times is about his lovely child but maximum he can do is to look at their photographs and keep himself contended and wait for the day to be back at home and hold his child for the very first time. Just imagine the quantum of pain.
  3. A sailor usually is unable to see his child growing. He misses out on the important transformations of his child’s life. He misses out that first walk, the time when his kid spoke for the first time, first time when his kid went to school. This makes him really sad. All he can rely upon is the photographs and videos.
  4. A sailor usually carry a lot of photographs and videos of his child and family, these are his lifeline on board, he loves his family and child like nobody else.
  5. He misses out on important occasions like his child’s birthday, parent teacher meeting at school and other such events which really upsets him as well as his child.
  6. While on board, he keep planning the vacations with his child. He never forgets to collect gifts for his kid from the ports he visits.
  7. The time when he see his kid for last time before joining the ship is the worst moment of his contract and when he see his kid for the first time after signing off is the happiest moment.
  8. When he hear the voice of his kid on the phone, he chuckles himself like a kid.
  9. When his kid is sick at home, he can’t sleep even for a moment on board. Worst part? He can’t do anything from the ship except calling almost every hour.

Despite all the sacrifices he makes and the emotional turmoil he goes through, he, like any other father is the torchbearer in his kid’s life. He is hard outside but soft inside.

A sailor makes sure that his kid never faces a problem in his/her life even at the cost of spending a major portion of his life away from his kid and the world.

This father’s day we salute all the fathers and especially the fathers who are sailors..!!!
