The Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean in the early morning of 15 April 1912, after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK, to New York City, US. The sinking resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 passengers and crew, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.

The Titanic hit an iceberg 11:40 p.m. (ship’s time) on 14 April 1912 on her maiden voyage and sank 2 h 40 min later on 15 April 1912.

Here are 10 things you did not know about the Titanic:

1. Titanic became a Unesco underwater cultural heritage site 100 years later, on April 14, 2012.

2. The wreck of the Titanic lies at a depth of approximately 2.4 miles.

3. The wreck was finally discovered 73 years after the sinking, on September 1, 1985.

4. The last remaining survivor of the disaster, Millvina Dean, died on May 31, 2009, aged 97. She was two months old at the time of the accident.

5. A silent movie, Saved From the Titanic, began filming five days after the sinking. It starred Dorothy Gibson, who was a survivor of the trip.6. Around a dozen, dogs were on board of which three were rescued, two Pomeranians and a Pekinese. The ship’s cat, Jenny, did not survive.

7. There were 20,000 bottles of beer on board, 1,500 bottles of wine and 8,000 cigars – all for the use of first-class passengers.

8. The last supper served to first-class passengers consisted of 11 courses.

9. A biscuit from a lifeboat on the Titanic was sold at auction for £15,000 in 2013.

10. A violin supposedly played by band leader Wallace Hartley as the ship sank went for £900,000.
